Data Mining

When investigating fraud
there can be a huge number of transactions
that need to be carefully reviewed to identify
trends or “systems” by which frauds
are committed and, thereby, identify the evidence
which will prove the fraud. Once the fraud
has been identified and proved, it is normally
a short procedure to identify the individual
or individuals who have committed the fraud.
To speed this process and filter the data
which shows neither system nor evidence,
computerised techniques are used to “mine
the data” for the information the
investigator requires. Data Mining is thus
a computerised process that enables an intricate
and accurate review of all the databases,
to identify and numerically or more often
graphically, represent the fraudulent processes
and actions.

Data Mining is a fast and effective method
by which corporate fraud can be identified
and investigated. It also a pro active management
tool that enables procedural and operational
weaknesses to be identified and, thereby
eliminated or mitigated.
